Introduction

This presentation is intended to teach claims professionals to understand, summarize, and analyze more complex estimates from contractors and consultants on first and third party claims. It's not easy, but it is a very valuable skill. Remediation and repair projects are VERY expensive, yet few people really understand how to analyze the fairness and value of the costs. Cost estimating is a profession with specialized skills, training, education, and certifications - but it's not rocket science. Plus, there is some math, so it's scary to a lot of people. There are many moving parts in a big estimate: designers, insurance, labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors...the list can go on and on. This presentation will remind claims professionals that construction is not terribly difficult to understand; it's just sticks and stones and pieces of glass and steel stacked neatly. What makes it seem hard is the complexity; the sheer number of components, requiring an organized approach that will be shared in the presentation.
